Important Notes
Driving Laws
Every state sets its own seizure-free period, and a handful require your doctor to report you to the DMV. Pennsylvania's own transportation department admitted in writing that the rule was making patients hide seizures from their physicians. Know your state's before your next appointment.
Level 4 Epilepsy Centers
If your seizures aren't controlled after 12 months with a general neurologist — or after two medications have failed — national guidelines say you should be at a Level 3 or Level 4 center. Most people who meet that bar were never told it existed.
Check out the NAEC to find a Level 3 or4 Epilepsy Center near you.
School Laws
Required or Permissive — this is the distinction that separates a law that protects a kid from a law that reads well in a press release. California permits. Texas, Illinois, and Ohio require. Pennsylvania is mid-fight.

The Federal Ask
H.R. 9956 would set a national floor for seizure training in schools. As of August 2026, it has zero cosponsors — not one member of Congress has signed on. That's true whether your state has a strong law, a weak one, or none.
Support Groups
Local doesn't mean affiliated. A wave of state epilepsy organizations cut ties with the national foundation in 2018 and operate independently now. The group nearest you may have no connection to the name you searched for — and that's often a point in its favor.
SUPED
Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy is the leading cause of epilepsy-related death, and the risk climbs sharply when seizures aren't controlled. Most people learn it exists from a search bar, not from their neurologist. Ask yours directly, and don't accept a deflection.
